Radio Talks
Due to efforts and negotiations of Mr. Neels Bezuidenhout an agreement has been reached with Radio RSG for the broadcasting of a series of radio talks on a monthly basis on the activities of SAIAE and on Agricultural Engineering in general. The broadcasts will take place at 12:30 on the dates listed below. Information on the speakers and subjects when available will be forwarded to members. A request is also made to Members busy with projects that can be broadcasted, to contact Mr. Bezuidenhout on 083-440-0131 (email : bezuidn@eskom.co.za). Your input in this regard will be appreciated. KwaZulu-Natal Branch Meeting and AGM
The SAIAE KwaZulu-Natal branch held a sucessful branch meeting on 27 October 2010. The branch meeting was held in conjunction with the annual design project presentation evening for final year Agricultural Engineering students at UKZN (report). The meeting was held at Ukulinga Research Farm, UKZN in Pietermaritzburg and was attended by 83 people including members, sponsors, students and their parents. The meeting was followed by supper.
SAIAE National Multi-Day CPD - 2010 A Success
Well done and thank you to the Pretoria Branch of SAIAE for organising and hosting the successful SAIAE National multi-day CPD event held at Pumulani Lodge, Pretoria from 28 to 30 September 2010. The theme of the CPD event was “Technology and Energy for Food Production”. Many of the speakers have kindly made their presentations available.
SANCID Symposium - 2010
The South African National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage (SANCID) Symposium will be held at the Desert Palace Hotel and Casino Resort in Upington from 16 to 18 November 2010. The theme of the Symposium is “Efficient Water Use for Food Production”. Please see the brochure and registration form for further datails.
Project Management CPD Event In KwaZulu-Natal

Agricultural Engineers Part Of Award Winning Vehicle Scheduling Project
“In 2005 a SASRI project funded by the Department of Transport and involving MScEng student Ryan Giles, showed that large savings could be made if vehicles transporting sugarcane to mills were carefully scheduled. Such an initiative would significantly reduce both the number of vehicles and the number of no-cane stops. A case study indicated that in excess of R 18 m could be saved each year. During 2006 Ryan joined Crickmay & Associates (PTY) LTD who then became the service providers for a scheduling system known as FREDD. In 2009 the success of the FREDD project was recognised for its contributions to the efficiency of the supply chain and was awarded the prestigious gold award by the South African Logistics industry.” Professor Peter Lyne. Short Course: Hygienic Design of Food Processing Plants
The course aims to make established and potential food processors aware of the standards that are required for modern, safe food processing installations, how to implement such standards and what documentation with regard to such standards is available locally.
